Port & Ship Familiarisation Course
12-Mar-2009
BMT De Beer b.v. Rotterdam, runs the 3 days "Port & Ship Familiarisation" courses, which provides a practical overview of the Marine Industry in the port of Rotterdam for those whose work involves contact with merchant ships and the problems generated by their operations.
The intention of the course is to provide the participants the basic practical knowledge and background which will assist them during their daily tasks at the office when dealing with marine claims and insurance.
The emphasis of the course is more practical than theoretical. The primary activities will involve visits to various companies in the port of Rotterdam such as those specialising in container, bulk and fruit operations. Participants will have the opportunity to see at first hand grain silos and dry bulk terminals in the Rotterdam-Europoort/ Maasvlakte area where the majority of the agribulk (grain and crude animal feed) and coal/ ore are stored and transhipped. As Rotterdam is also a major container port where an increasing proportion of container throughput takes place on the Maasvlakte, there will be a visit to stevedoring company ECT which operates three terminals. Fruit is transported in reefer containers so knowledge of this will be gained during a visit to Rotterdam Fruitport, located in the Vierhaven/Merwehaven area. The cold stores will be explained and their chilling temperatures experienced. There will be a visit to a major ship-yard where opportunities will be offered to see ship repair jobs and conversions being carried out.
During these visits attention will be paid to explaining procedures, pointing out where problems could occur and allowing participants to gain knowledge of or extend marine nomenclature.
In addition, there will be presentations and/or discussions about different areas of marine operations in our office, with BMT surveyors able to answer questions about any aspect of ship operations which may be of interest to the group or individual.
Those who would like to attend the course are requested to contact BMT De Beer's Rotterdam office, Mrs Sandra Rijke (e-mail: s.rijke@bmtdebeer.com) for further particulars. She can also assist you with arranging suitable accommodation.
The course from 21 to 24 April 2009 is already fully booked, but more courses will be organised this year.
